This has been a very odd year for weather in Pocatello, and really around the country.. We started out with early snow and cold temps in November so every winter lover was getting pretty excited. That was about all the excitement. Since Christmas we haven’t seen much encouragement for a white winter. So what do you do when its 40 degrees and no snow?
Rid A Bike
A road bike, mountain bike, what about a fat bike?. It might seem too cold to go out and ride but think about it. When you go skiing it is usually 20 to 30 degrees. So why can’t you ride your bike in that? Last Saturday I spend several hours up on the City Creek Trail System cruising around. It was about 30 degrees. That was actually perfect because the mud was still frozen so I didn’t ruin the trail and I had good grip. There were a lot of trails with ice/snow in the ruts, and by early afternoon the mud started thawing.. I was on my mountain bike so I called it a day. A fat bike would have been awesome in that situation. Fat bikes are at their best when there is a packed trail or, in Saturday afternoon’s case, patches of snow and ice on muddy trails.
Just Feel Like Running
It’s never too cold to run. Maybe it can be, but running is a good way to get rid of some of that cabin fever when the weather is too warm for snow but too cold for swimming. If you are in Pocatello you could join us for our weekly group run and walk. Each Wednesday night a group meets at Element Outfitters and Ace Hardware on South 5th AVE. We meet between 5:30 and 5:45 and pick a place we want to run or walk. There are people who just walk, and people who run several miles. This is a casual, come as you want, group run. If you find it hard to be motivated, going with a group can be what you need. If you want more info or to sign up for reminders just comment below.
Disc Golf
Disc Golfing is a fun, inexpensive sport. The city of Pocatello, and most other places, leave the baskets out year round. This time of year the ground can be a little muddy so it is best to play a a place like Ross Park Disc Golf Course where there is lots of maintained grass.
I think we associate activities that don’t involve snow as warm weather activities. But many of those activities can still be done in the cold, and you can have just as much fun doing them. Please comment below and share what you like to do when the weather is in between.
